Tsugi is a one-of-one bowl handcrafted from reclaimed oak, ambrosia maple, and recycled skateboard veneers. Built from individually arranged sections of hardwood, the composition brings together shifting grain, subtle changes in tone, and intermittent bands of colour that appear throughout the interior, exterior, and rim.
Named for the Japanese word associated with joining and connection, Tsugi explores the idea of separate materials becoming part of a larger whole. Reclaimed hardwood sections create an irregular rhythm across the surface, while small fragments of skateboard veneer interrupt the natural grain with restrained moments of colour.
The broad, shallow form allows the construction itself to remain visible from every angle. Turned, shaped, sanded, and finished entirely by hand, Tsugi is designed as a functional object while carrying the presence of a singular collected piece.
Variations in grain, colour, reclaimed material, and veneer placement are inherent to the materials and are part of the character of the piece.
