The Kōmyō is a one-of-one sculptural bowl handcrafted from ambrosia maple, padauk, and recycled skateboard veneers. Across the broad, shallow form, irregular sections of figured maple are joined into a shifting composition of grain, spalting, and natural colour, while narrow lines of skateboard veneer travel through the surface and a single band of padauk creates a stronger interruption across the rim and body.
Named for the Japanese word associated with light and illumination, The Kōmyō explores the contrast between quiet natural material and deliberate intervention. The ambrosia maple creates a warm, luminous field, while the dark grain markings, coloured veneer lines, and saturated padauk introduce movement and structure throughout the piece.
Designed as both a functional vessel and sculptural object, the bowl is individually composed, laminated, turned, shaped, sanded, and finished by hand. Its wide rim, shallow interior, and raised foot give the piece a balanced architectural presence while allowing the full construction to remain visible from every angle.
Variations in grain, colour, natural markings, and veneer placement are inherent to the materials and are part of the character of the piece.
