The Ravel is a one-of-one salt and pepper mill set handcrafted from ambrosia maple, walnut, purpleheart, padauk, and recycled skateboard veneer. Across the two pieces, contrasting hardwoods are joined with flowing sections of coloured veneer, creating shifting lines that travel through the surfaces and change as each mill is turned.
Named for the way separate materials intertwine and become part of a larger composition, The Ravel explores movement through contrast. Warm hardwoods and richly coloured exotic species give the set its foundation, while the exposed layers of recycled skateboard veneer move between them, appearing, disappearing, and re-emerging across the sculpted forms.
Designed as functional objects for everyday use, each mill is individually constructed, shaped, sanded, and finished by hand. Together, the two pieces form a collected composition while remaining distinct objects in their own right.
Variations in grain, colour, and veneer placement are inherent to the materials and are part of the character of each piece.
