Kisen is a one-of-one sculptural bowl handcrafted from ambrosia maple, recycled skateboard veneer, and mahogany. Built using a segmented construction, the bowl brings together the natural markings of the maple with sweeping lines of reclaimed veneer and a single mahogany strip that travels through the form.
Named after the Japanese word kisen, meaning a line, path, or course, Kisen draws its identity from movement and intersection. As the bowl was constructed and turned, the curved skateboard veneer lines revealed changing trajectories through the maple, converging, separating, and crossing the mahogany strip as they move across the interior and exterior surfaces.
The broad, low profile allows the composition to remain the focus. Natural variations and ambrosia markings move through the maple, while the coloured veneer lines create sweeping arcs that change direction as they travel through the form. Viewed from different angles, the composition shifts as individual lines disappear, re-emerge, and continue across the rim and exterior of the bowl.
Designed as both a functional vessel and sculptural object, Kisen is individually constructed, turned, sanded, and finished by hand. The relationship between the natural markings of the maple, the placement of the mahogany, and the movement of the recycled skateboard veneer ensures that the composition cannot be reproduced.
Variations in grain, colour, ambrosia markings, and veneer placement are inherent to the natural and reclaimed materials and are part of the character of the piece.
