Kasan is a one-of-one sculptural bowl handcrafted entirely from recycled skateboard decks. Built from layers of reclaimed maple veneer, the bowl reveals the material in a new form, transforming the colour, wear, and history of discarded skateboards into a continuous composition of shifting lines and exposed layers.
Named after the Japanese word for volcano, Kasan draws its identity from accumulation, pressure, and the gradual formation of layers. As the bowl was turned, the laminated construction revealed unexpected changes in direction and colour, creating contours that appear to fold, rise, and move through the form.
The restrained profile allows the material to remain the focus. Broad sweeps of natural maple are interrupted by concentrated bands of colour, while the sculpted foot continues the layered construction beneath the bowl. Viewed from different angles, the composition changes as individual veneers disappear, re-emerge, and travel through the form.
Designed as both a functional vessel and sculptural object, Kasan is individually constructed, turned, sanded, and finished by hand. No two bowls made from recycled skateboard decks can produce the same arrangement of colour, grain, and exposed layers.
Variations in colour, markings, and veneer placement are inherent to the reclaimed materials and are part of the character of the piece.
