The Inlet is a one-of-one salt and pepper mill set handcrafted from maple, walnut, purpleheart, padauk, and recycled skateboard veneer. Across the two pieces, broad sections of contrasting hardwood are interrupted by narrow layers of coloured veneer that curve through the forms, appearing and disappearing as each mill is turned.
Named for the narrow passages where water moves into the surrounding landscape, The Inlet explores the relationship between larger fields of natural grain and the smaller channels that move between them. Rich walnut, purpleheart, and padauk create areas of depth and contrast, while maple and exposed skateboard veneer introduce lighter surfaces and shifting lines of colour.
Designed as functional objects for everyday use, each mill is individually composed, laminated, shaped, sanded, and finished by hand. Together, the two pieces form a collected composition while remaining distinct objects in their own right.
Variations in grain, colour, and veneer placement are inherent to the materials and are part of the character of each piece.
