The Shibui is a one-of-one joinery mallet handcrafted from purpleheart, maple, and recycled skateboard veneers. A substantial purpleheart head is interrupted by a restrained maple field, while a narrow composition of reclaimed skateboard veneers travels through the mallet as a continuous line of colour and material.
Named after the Japanese aesthetic principle of shibui—beauty found in restraint, simplicity, and subtle complexity—the piece is designed to reveal more through use and closer observation. The colourful history of the skateboard veneers remains largely concealed within the handle and head, emerging only where the form allows it to be seen.
Designed as a functional tool, the mallet balances substantial striking mass with a shaped handle intended for controlled joinery work. Each component is individually composed, laminated, shaped, sanded, and finished by hand.
Variations in colour, veneer placement, grain, and markings from the original skateboard decks are inherent to the reclaimed material and are part of the character of each piece.
